SOPA & PIPA. One sounds like a misspelled soap brand, the other sounds like Kate Middleton’s sister, but they are neither. For the past few months, the whole world has been talking about them. This week, it almost felt like they had a life of their own when we saw them posted everywhere – in all the major sites across the world wide web.
So what exactly are they?
SOPA stands for Stop Online Piracy Act while PIPA stands for Protect IP Act. These are two legislations currently being proposed in the United States of America. They are designed to curb the piracy of software and content – anything and everything that has a copyright.
When you first hear about them, they seem perfectly fine. How can laws that protect the hard work of other people be wrong? This is why a handful of BIG companies are supporting them including GoDaddy.com, one of the Internet’s biggest web hosting and domain name companies.
It’s a US law. If approved, Malaysia is safe, RIGHT?
Wrong. Just think about the websites we visit every day. How many of them are based in the US? If you own a website, where is the website hosted? If you have a blog from WordPress, Blogger, LiveJournal etc. – where are they hosted? If you have a Facebook or Twitter account, guess where it’s based? One answer: USA.

GENERAL ALLEGATIONS
At all times relevant to this Indictment:
1.KIM DOTCOM, MEGAUPLOAD LIMITED, VESTOR LIMITED, FINNBATATO, JULIUS BENCKO, SVEN ECHTERNACH, MATHIAS ORTMANN, ANDRUSNOMM, and BRAM VAN DER KOLK, the defendants, and others known and unknown to theGrand Jury, were members of the “Mega Conspiracy,” a worldwide criminal organization whosemembers engaged in criminal copyright infringement and money laundering on a massive scalewith estimated harm to copyright holders well in excess of $500,000,000 and reported income inexcess of $175,000,000.

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) is a United States bill introduced by U.S. Representative Lamar S. Smith (R-TX) to expand the ability of U.S. law enforcement to fight online trafficking in copyrighted intellectual property and counterfeit goods. Provisions include the requesting of court orders to bar advertising networks and payment facilities from conducting business with infringing websites, and search engines from linking to the sites, and court orders requiring Internet service providers to block access to the sites. The law would expand existing criminal laws to include unauthorized streaming of copyright material, imposing a maximum penalty of five years in prison.
Proponents of the bill say it protects the intellectual property market and corresponding industry, jobs and revenue, and is necessary to bolster enforcement of copyright laws, especially against foreign websites. Claiming flaws in present laws that do not cover foreign owned and operated sites, and citing examples of "active promotion of rogue websites" by U.S. search engines, proponents say stronger enforcement tools are needed.
Opponents say the proposed legislation threatens free speech and innovation, and enables law enforcement to block access to entire internet domains due to infringing material posted on a single blog or webpage. They have raised concerns that SOPA would bypass the "safe harbor" protections from liability presently afforded to Internet sites by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Library associations have expressed concerns that the bill's emphasis on stronger copyright enforcement would expose libraries to prosecution. Other opponents state that requiring search engines to delete a domain name could begin a worldwide arms race of unprecedented censorship of the Web and violates the First Amendment. |

 VIRUS...sudah merebak ke peranti mudah alih.
TAHUN ini berkemungkinan tahun mencabar untuk dunia maya terutama segmen mudah alih seperti telefon pintar yang lengkap dengan Internet apabila serangan virus bakal dipertingkatkan seperti yang diunjurkan ramai penganalisis.
Platform Android antara sasaran utama apatah lagi ia diiktiraf sistem operasi paling meluas digunakan dalam telefon pintar yang mengundang kebimbangan di kalangan pengguna.
Menurut laporan pengeluar anti virus terkemuka, Kaspersky Lab (Kaspersky), 2012 bakal menyaksikan penjenayah siber menyasarkan platform mudah alih yang memberi tumpuan sepenuhnya kepada mewujudkan ‘malware’ untuk Google Android.
Malware ialah kependekan bagi ‘malicious software’ iaitu kod jahat yang ditulis oleh penjenayah siber dengan tujuan mengganggu sistem komputer, mengumpul maklumat sensitif dan melepasi capaian sistem komputer yang biasanya terhad, tanpa pengetahuan pemilik sebenarnya.
Ia dapat disaksikan menerusi pertambahan membimbangkan anasir jahat yang menular dalam Android pertengahan tahun 2011.
